1.0 Introduction

However, rapid urban growth also creates social challenges that affect relationships, values, and daily life (United Nations, 2019).

Understanding the impact of urbanization on social life is important. It helps sociologists explain changes in family structure, community interaction, and social behavior in urban settings.

1.1 Background of the Study

Urbanization has expanded rapidly over the past century. Industrialization and economic development have driven population concentration in cities. While cities promote innovation and diversity, they also disrupt traditional social systems that exist in rural communities (Wirth, 1938).

Social life in urban areas differs significantly from rural life. Urban residents often experience weaker social ties, reduced communal interaction, and increased individualism. Neighbors may live close physically but remain socially distant. This reduces social cohesion and mutual support within communities (Simmel, 1903).

Urbanization also affects family structures. Extended families are increasingly replaced by nuclear families. In some cases, individuals live alone due to work demands and mobility. These changes can weaken family support systems and increase social isolation, especially among the elderly and low income groups.

At the same time, urbanization offers social opportunities. Cities provide access to diverse cultures, ideas, and lifestyles. Social mobility increases through education and employment. However, inequality remains a major concern. Urban poverty, slums, overcrowding, and unemployment create social stress and conflict (Davis, 2006).
